Avoiding Evil

I am all for warning people of certain dangers and exposing those who claim to be of Christ but are really wolves in sheep clothing, but I watched a video recently shared on Facebook and I had an issue with some points in the video, specifically with the man in the video reading actual incantations from books containing witch craft and other excerpts from these books. He named particular witchcraft books, and books filled with heresy and mystical stuff, then he goes on to say, “Don’t get these books.” I thought to myself why even mention the names in the first place? If people could only truly realize what it means when it is written that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places, Ephesians 6:12, then people would be more careful and wise and diligent to avoid evil in these days. We’re battling against the invisible, against forces of darkness we have no business meddling with for any reason, not even for “research”.

I think there is a great danger in feeling the need to research things that are clearly evil all for the sake of saying you’re educating yourself on what the enemy is doing or to warn people to avoid. Must I taste poison myself in order to warn somebody that something is poisonous? No. Why purchase a book with spells and so on? For research? That doesn’t make sense. The enemy has many believing that God has given some people some certain ability to actually research into darkness, false doctrines and other mythical stuff and come out unscathed. There is nothing in scripture that supports such notions. The enemy has always been aware of what the possession of certain knowledge can do. He’s been aware ever since the Garden of Eden where he convinced Eve to eat of the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

We are advised to avoid all appearances of evil, 1 Thessalonians 5:22. If you’re in a book store and see a book written by a well known, or not so well known, warlock, witch, false prophet, false teacher, false apostle, or spiritual guru, which contains spells, lies, and all sorts of deceitful ideologies and images, etc etc, why purchase the book? Furthermore, why read the book and then mention the title of the book and excerpts from the book on a program directed to Christian viewers?

We don’t need to purchase and read those books in order to arm ourselves for spiritual battle against the enemy or to warn people of the dangers in those books or in this world in general. It is written that the scriptures make a man (fully equipped) for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:17. Which basically means that knowing and understanding the word of God and heeding it’s instructions is sufficient.

There is a guy I know who has gotten into astrology, numerology, and all kinds of other stuff because of “research”. Now he can’t even have a conversation about the Bible or anything without getting into discussions about shakras and astrological signs etc etc. He even tries to use his new found information to try and decipher the mysteries in scripture. It is written that spiritual things are spiritually discerned, 1 Corinthians 2:14. It is useless trying to use the wisdom of man, the philosophies of this world, to understand and explain the word of God. Only the Spirit of God can lead a person to understand God’s words. We have to guard our hearts like the word of God says.

God did not say “Oh, you don’t read that, but you over there, you can because it won’t affect you like that other person. Now you can warn my other sheep since you read that witchcraft book or viewed that video all about witchcraft and false doctrines on Youtube.” The guy in the video I watched was like, “Ya’ll don’t read any of this stuff, but I can because it won’t affect me”, as though he possesses some power or gift that other believers in Christ do not possess. The Spirit of God will NEVER lead a person to research anything evil in order to warn God’s children of the evils in this world, we have discernment for that, we have God’s Spirit for that, we have the living word of God for that. We who are in Christ Jesus, who have the words of Christ Jesus dwelling within us richly in all wisdom, Colossians 3:16, are fully equipped for battle, we don’t need any additional “research” or to hear certain incantations in order to know evil is present.

I have explained this same thing to some other brethren once ago but they were determined to be wise in their own eyes and see nothing wrong with “researching” certain harmful things all for the sake of gaining knowledge to know what the enemy is up too. If only people would realize the enemy loves that, when we are so hungry for knowledge that we overstep our boundaries and go off and start researching all kind of mystical nonsense and false doctrines. There is nothing wrong with desiring knowledge but we must know that it is God that possesses all the knowledge and wisdom and truth that we need to be able to stand against the wiles of the enemy.

I do believe greater is He that is within us than he that is within the world, 1 John 4:4, but I also know that doesn’t mean we go ahead and partake in something that is obviously evil even for the sake of research. Jesus knew God the Father would not let anything happen to Him outside of His will, but still Jesus did not jump off of that cliff when the enemy tempted Him. Jesus told satan, “It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” Luke 4:12. We don’t intentionally put ourselves in harms way because we know God is our refuge. Yes, God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and of a sound mind. A sound mind would never advise us to do anything that would harm ourselves or others in any way. Therefore, “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, and strength to your bones.” Proverbs 3:6-8
